Assistant Environmental Manager
Are you an experienced environmental professional looking to make a real impact in a highly regulated and unique operational environment? This is an exciting opportunity to support environmental compliance, drive continuous improvement, and help shape the future of the environmental discipline at Dounreay.
As Assistant Environmental Manager, you will act as deputy to the Head of Profession Environment, providing technical support and leadership across environmental management activities while ensuring compliance with environmental permits, licences, and ISO 14001 requirements.
What will you be doing
You'll support the development and continuous improvement of environmental management systems, helping ensure compliance with regulatory and site requirements. Working closely with operational teams, regulators, and stakeholders, you'll provide specialist environmental advice, support audits and investigations, and contribute to strategic environmental initiatives.
Key responsibilities include:
- Supporting environmental compliance with permits, licences, authorisations, and ISO 14001 requirements.
- Providing specialist advice on environmental and waste management matters.
- Supporting audits, incident investigations, and continuous improvement activities.
- Deputising for the Head of Profession Environment and contributing to the development of environmental professionals.
Who are we looking for
We're looking for a motivated environmental professional with experience in the nuclear sector or another highly regulated industry operating under UK environmental permitting legislation. You'll be confident working with a range of stakeholders and capable of providing expert environmental guidance across complex programmes.
You'll ideally have:
- A degree in an environmental, engineering, or related discipline, or equivalent experience.
- Experience in environmental management, environmental permitting, and UK environmental legislation.
- Experience maintaining and developing ISO 14001-certified management systems.
- Strong communication and line management skills, with membership of a relevant professional body (or willingness to work towards it).
Experience in environmental risk assessment, environmental impact assessment, air quality modelling, planning, or radioactive waste management would be advantageous.
