Assistant Operations Manager
Vacancies have arisen for assistant operations managers within Reactors programme. The purpose of the post is to safely manage the facility. The job holder will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the facility and will hold the deputy authority to operate (ATO) holder authorisation.

The facility operations team within the reactors programme provides safety and compliance support to ensure our facilities operate within the safe operating envelope as defined in our safety cases. We are seeking individuals with experience to ensure our facilities can deliver our decommissioning programme. The ideal candidate will have strong facility knowledge and a general understanding of safety cases, safe systems of work and compliance maintenance requirements.
Responsibilities:
- Provide input to baseline programme and strategies for the facility including analysis of dependencies and constraints, risks and assumptions
- Support the Senior Manager in the delivery of projects/programmes of work and approvals
- Engage with governance arrangements to enable effective decision making, including accountability processes ensuring implementation of the Dounreay Management System associated with an ATO Holder as defined in manual
- Expedite safe project delivery to the satisfaction of internal and external stakeholders
- Monitor and report on internal performance against safety, costs, programme and quality, identify deviations and implement remedial actions as appropriate
- Support the implementation and maintenance of succession plans
- Support the preparation, approval and issue of technical specifications and safety documentation through review to implementation
- Efficiently manage facilities/projects within the envelope of the Safety Case and lifetime plan
- Review and report on identified problems and incidents, establishing causes and identifying, recommending and implementing solutions
- Support arrangements that are in place for Dounreay to directly control all nuclear safety, security and safeguards matters associated with the facility
- Ensure that in instances where the contractor does not adopt NRS Dounreay’s safety and security management requirements then the contractor's safety and security management arrangements are of at least an equivalent standard to NRS Dounreay's
- Ensure that any major contractors who are operating or maintaining Dounreay's facilities are competent to Dounreay's standards and appointed as required to the appropriate SERP
- Ensure that waste discharges and disposals are in accordance with Environmental Operating Rules and instructions, EASR Authorisations and non-radiological discharge requirements, as defined in manual
- Define and rehearse local emergency arrangements
- As Deputy ATO be aware of Key Security Equipment (KSyRE) in their area of responsibility and proactively liaise with the Security Delivery Team and Engineers
- Ensure that tasks are assessed, planned, authorised and controlled in line with the requirements of manual
- Support the management and reporting on nuclear and radioactive material as defined in standard and the Accountancy Control Plan
- Perform the responsibilities of Authorisations relevant to post including appointment to a Site Emergency Response Role and Deputy ATO Holder Authorisation
- Manage Dounreay staff as a Line Manager
Aptitudes and Experience:
- HND Science or equivalent qualification plus experience
- Relevant Plant and Industrial Operations experience
- Relevant Nuclear Facility Management experience
- Good Communication Skills
- Knowledge of Work pack preparation
- Understanding of plant operations
- Relevant line management experience
- Post specific capability analysis number
