Environmental Advisor
Job Description
A vacancy has arisen within Reactors programme for an environmental advisor. The purpose of the post is to provide environmental support to Dounreay to promote and document compliance with environmental legislation and adherence to the environmental safety strategy. The job holder is responsible for delivering environmental advice on compliance requirements and the site’s environmental safety strategy and preparing documentation for Dounreay site and projects.

The successful candidate will form an integral part to the delivery of the Reactors programme. The role sits within the programme safety, security, health, environment, and quality (SSHEQ) team who provide a multi-disciplinary support service to projects throughout their lifecycle as well as to facility operations. The ideal candidate will enjoy a varied role with a mix of desk and facility-based tasks and enjoy interacting with people on a regular basis. They must be comfortable with producing and reviewing documentation as well as identifying and giving advice on compliance and good practice for both radioactive and non-radioactive environmental aspects.
Responsibilities:
- Act as a key stakeholder in a range of environmental processes, including Dounreay modification reports (DMRs), hazard and operability study (HAZOPs), unusual occurrence report (UNOR) investigations, to implement management systems, standards and procedures
- Provide specialist environmental support to interface with SEPA on behalf of facilities and project teams
- Represent Dounreay at internal forums
- Provide environmental advice to facilities and project teams
- Deliver site and plant specific environment process and awareness training
- Implement improvements in the environmental management system
- Produce environmental documentation in line with legislative and project requirements, including aspects assessments, best practicable means (BPM) assessments and environmental support files
- Participate in arrangements for the sharing of environmental knowledge and support to other site environmental specialists
- Deliver specified tasks from the Dounreay plan
- Review the efficacy of environmental arrangements and resources in their area
- Undertake internal checks for the environmental arrangements in their area
- Provide technical secretarial support to relevant environmental committees
- Perform the responsibilities of authorisations relevant to post
Aptitudes and Experience:
- HND in Environmental Studies or equivalent qualification plus experience
- Demonstrable experience in environmental operations
- Convey oral and written environmental information in a clear and concise manner and be able to think critically and collate and analyse data
- Be effective at prioritising and organising workload and complete tasks in a timely manner
- Be motivated and a self-starter and work well within a team
