Job Description

A vacancy has arisen within balance of site programme for a safety advisor construction.  The job holder will be responsible for providing authoritative advice on industrial health and safety matters as defined in Dounreay standards and procedures and associated regulatory requirements specific to the field of construction/demolition.

The successful candidate will form an integral part of the safety, health, environment and quality team supporting the delivery of the balance of site and site services programmes.  The safety team provides a service to the projects and facilities from assisting with planning and project initiation to implementing correct safety controls and monitoring compliance with health and safety legislation and site arrangements.  The ideal candidate will enjoy a variety of tasks including walk rounds and inspections along with some desk-based activities, interacting with all levels of people on a regular basis including contractors and regulators.  The successful candidate will be expected to focus on advice on topics associated with construction design and management (CDM) and construction.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Liaise with stakeholders, including regulators and auditors on health and safety issues 
  • Represent Dounreay at internal forums 
  • Advise and assist projects with the preparation of pre-construction information 
  • Provide industrial health and safety advice to site construction and demolition projects   
  • Mentor other safety advisors in the field of construction and CDM regulations 
  • Design and deliver industrial health & safety training 
  • Undertake and report on planned and unplanned industrial health and safety inspections, report observed safety deficiencies and suggest remedial action
  • Review and comment on contractor documentation and site management system documents where required 
  • Contribute to and on occasion lead risk assessments 
  • Chair or contribute to Level 2 investigations 
  • Perform the responsibilities of authorisations relevant to post   

Aptitudes and Experience:

  • Membership of the Institute of Occupational Health & Safety
  • Extensive post qualification experience of construction and/or demolition projects
  • Fully conversant with CDM Regulations 2015
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to build strong professional relationships
  • Ability to influence the behaviours of others
  • Ability to liaise with contractors and management at all levels in an appropriately professional manner
  • A team player who can work with minimal supervision
  • Ability to use own initiative, particularly when responding to real time situations
