Job Description

Vacancies exist for trainee safety case writers to support the ongoing site decommissioning programmes.  The successful candidate will be embedded within portfolio and support for initial training and then rotated around each of the three programme areas for on the job training and experience.

The role of the safety case writer is to support the provision of timely, fit-for-purpose, safety case documentation. 

Safety cases are written to industry standards and facilitate the projects being undertaken on the site in support of the life time plan. Safety cases are required for new build, operations, modifications, and decommissioning.

The role entails hazard identification, hazard assessment, risk assessment, designation of controls, providing safety case advice, and presenting reasoned arguments.

Salary will start at £37,147 - £44,811, depending on experience and will rise to £44,811 to £76,934 once fully trained.

Main Responsibilities: 

  • Support due process requirements of nuclear safety cases
  • Liaise with stakeholders involved with the safety case
  • Identify safety hazards by a range of complementary techniques
  • Develop safety arguments for use in nuclear safety cases
  • Write clear and concise arguments and technical content to form a ‘fit for purpose’ safety case
  • Produce evidence for nuclear safety cases
  • Verify evidence for use in ‘fit for purpose’ nuclear safety cases
  • Provide risk assessments including identification of engineering and administrative controls from the safety case which can be implemented within the plant
  • Support through life safety issues, including periodic review, optioneering reviews and plant modifications
  • Obtain contextual information for nuclear safety cases
  • Perform the responsibilities of management appointments relevant to the post

Attributes and experience:

  • Degree in science/engineering/technology or equivalent qualification plus experience
  • Knowledge of safety case production and experience in industrial/plant hazard/risk assessment would be advantageous
  • Radiological awareness
  • Logical thinker with problem solving skills and good written communication
  • Post specific capability analysis assessment
