Vacancies have arisen within site services for senior environmental specialists.  The purpose of each post is to execute the role’s scope of work associated with environmental and compliance management and ultimate closure of the Dounreay site and Low Level Waste (LLW) disposal facilities.  The job holders will be responsible for performing and directing environmental activities and document delivery at a strategic and technical level throughout the project lifecycles.

Roles are available within 3 areas

  • 2x Environmental Safety Case (ESC) - Apply specialised knowledge and experience to produce, maintain and monitor the ESCs and to provide technical advice relevant to the role.
  • 1x Waste Disposal – manage EASR (Environmental Authorisations (Scotland) Regulations 2018) permit compliance and waste assurance activities for the LLW disposal facilities
  • 1x Environmental and beach monitoring programmes – manage and deliver EASR permit compliance relating to beach monitoring, particle retrieval, environmental monitoring, and reporting.

Job Description

Key responsibilities:

  • Support the development of, and provide advice on, the implementation of environmental management processes, standards and management systems
  • Liaise regularly with internal and external stakeholders and regulators to expedite project and programme delivery
  • Support development of sanction documents and business plans
  • Convey complex oral and written scientific information in a clear and concise manner, suitable for the audience
  • Identify non-compliance/bad practice and instigate remedial action
  • Manage, review and interpret complex technical data sets
  • Support the manager in the day-to-day delivery of tasks and problem solving
  • Produce and mentor others in the production of technical reports, specifications, documentation and assessments
  • Represent Dounreay at internal and external forums as delegated
  • Support project management activities, optimising plans to respond to changes when necessary
  • Act as contract manager as required
  • Perform the responsibilities of management appointments relevant to the post.  Be appointed to the radioactive waste advisor corporate body
  • Manage Dounreay staff as a line manager

Aptitudes and Experience: 

  • Degree qualified in science/engineering or equivalent qualifications plus experience
  • Comprehensive nuclear and environmental experience
  • Good understanding of international guidance and UK regulatory requirements in relation to radioactive waste disposal
  • Sound interpersonal and communication skills
  • Contract management experience is desirable
  • Post specific capability analysis assessment 10

Role Specific Desirable Aptitudes and Experience:

Environmental safety case

  • Experience of developing and managing environmental safety cases for radioactive waste disposal
  • Understand the requirements of the guidance on requirements for release from radioactive substances regulations (GRR) and the guidance on requirements for authorisation (GRA)

Waste disposal

  • Experience in radioactive waste management and assurance activities
  • Experience in environmental permitting and legislation
  • Understanding of environmental monitoring and environmental safety cases

Environmental and beach monitoring programmes

  • Understanding of gaseous, liquid and particulate materials in the environment
  • Experienced in negotiations with local stakeholders
  • Ability to identify and execute innovative solutions to technical problems
  • Undertake regular review of programmes to ensure optimal delivery
