Are you ready to take on a pivotal role in shaping how the site manages its waste now and into the future?  A vacancy has arisen for a Senior Waste Specialist within the Integrated Waste Strategy (IWS) team which is part of the Waste Head of Profession department.  It offers an opportunity for an experienced waste or environmental professional to lead critical elements of the IWS team programme of work.  This role places you at the centre of delivering the site’s waste strategy, advising on best practice, and supporting key decisions that influence safe and effective waste management.

What you will be doing

You will apply your specialist waste or environmental expertise to embed and monitor the delivery of the sites waste strategies.  This includes working with the site programme waste teams and other internal stakeholder on waste strategy development and engaging externally with the wider NRS, NDA and Regulators.  You will also play a major role in developing improvements to the Dounreay Waste Management System, influencing technical specifications while providing trusted waste management guidance to waste advisors and project teams. 

Your work will involve acting as a key stakeholder in a variety of waste processes and reviews, producing, and approving essential waste documentation, and interpreting complex waste data sets, regularly interfacing with internal teams, external stakeholders, and regulators.  You will also mentor waste specialists and contribute to training that strengthens waste strategy awareness across the organisation.

Key Deliverables:

  • Lead the development and gain approval for waste strategies, and monitor their ongoing implementation to demonstrate a golden thread from NDA strategy to onsite delivery of waste management
  • Where appropriate , lead on activities to improve waste strategy visibility and , to the Waste Management System
  • Provide regulatory and technical advice across the site related to waste strategy
  • Support and influence waste processes including Dounreay Modification Reports, HAZOPs, Unusual Occurrence investigations and Best Practical Means assessments while producing, reviewing, and approving essential waste documentation
  • Analyse problems and incidents, interpret waste data sets, interface with regulators and stakeholders, and recommend effective solutions to maintain compliance
  • Perform the responsibilities of Management Appointments relevant to post including Radioactive Waste Advisor body member

What you will bring

You will bring a solid technical foundation supported by an HND in Science or Engineering, or an equivalent qualification with relevant experience.  Your background includes comprehensive waste or environmental management experience, along with relevant nuclear or industrial site experience.  Strong writing skills and the ability to interpret information and produce high quality reports will enable you to contribute effectively to site waste strategy and compliance.
