Job Description

A vacancy has arisen within portfolio & support directorate for a software engineer.  The purpose of the post is to manage engineering software systems.  The job holder will be responsible for ensuring all engineering software systems are fully operable.

Hear from the Hiring Manager:
The software engineer role is based within the operational technology & industrial software (OTIS) section and the successful candidate will support the current OTIS team on different functions around the Dounreay estate, for example, stack sampling; PLC coding and programming; SCADA Configuration; software fault finding; software to instrument fault diagnostics.

A trainee would be considered for the role dependent on experience and qualifications.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Maintain and manage a configuration management system for engineering software systems
  • Support the senior software engineer in the development of the site arrangements for the management and evaluation of the cyber security threat in relation to computer based systems important to safety
  • Advise on the implementation of new and modified industrial control software systems, including identifying of training requirements and carrying out obsolescence review
  • Be point of contact for breakdowns and repairs to industrial control software systems and coordinate repairs.
  • Resolve technical queries
  • Design specification and commissioning of industrial control software systems
  • Liaise with regulators and stakeholders including suppliers/manufacturers on technical issues
  • Perform the responsibilities of management appointments relevant to the post

Aptitudes and Experience

  • HND in Engineering or equivalent based on engineering council standard for incorporated engineers
  • Comprehensive software engineering experience would be an advantage
  • Relevant experience in either an OT or IT field
  • C&I skills in instrument fault finding
  • Knowledge of design process
  • Commissioning - both document production and physical commissioning
  • Strong problem solving both in identification and developing appropriate solutions 
  • Post specific capability analysis assessment
