The purpose of the post is to provide waste support to the relevant business/programme/project area and manage wastes within their plants up to the point that the waste is handed over to waste operations/waste services for on-site/off-site disposal, treatment, or interim storage.  The job holder will carry out the duties of a Radioactive Material Coordinator (RMC).

Job Description

Hear from the hiring manager:
The job holder will be responsible for supervising the safe, secure, and environmentally compliant generation and consignment of waste, intervening if appropriate to prevent the mis consignment of waste from plants and facilities (LoD 1 Assurance). The job holder is responsible for working within the programme waste team to ensure projects and facilities wastes are managed in accordance with project specific waste plans and MAN 2007.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Support development of waste strategies for the facility e.g. attending options assessments as a facility representative
  • Supervise the safe, secure, and environmentally compliant generation of waste within the bounds of the safety operating envelope (such as safety case), ensuring that tasks are carried out by competent personnel in line with the requirements defined in MAN2007
  • Implement activity assessment methodologies in support of waste consignment
  • Supervise data acquisition provision in line with characterisation documentation
  • Support and supervise the resolution and recovery of waste non-conformances
  • Supervise data acquisition provision in line with characterisation documentation
  • Coordinate waste logistics for the facility including liaising with waste carriers
  • Author and maintain facility owned waste instructions
  • Review facility RAMS/instructions to ensure compliance with waste management system requirements
  • Attend work scope hazard reviews and provide facility specific waste advice (e.g. waste storage/logistics etc.)
  • Support production, review and implementation of PSWPs to ensure they are fit for purpose
  • Establish baseline ahead of waste generating activities and provide data to PWI team for reconciliation (i.e. waste forecasts)
  • Support regulatory inspections and closure of regulatory actions and escalate areas of concern or opportunities for improvement within the programme waste team.
  • Ensure arrangements are in place so that the waste hierarchy is applied, and waste is directed via the correct route
  • Ensure pre and post use check of all approved waste containers is undertaken to ensure that they are free from damage, corrosion etc. and deemed fit for purpose in the waste consignment process
  • Support the sharing of good practice, lessons learned and improvements by attending peer group meetings and cascading information from LfE
  • Maintain waste holdings inventory to ensure compliance with LC32 and LC34 and to inform waste forecasting
  • Oversee safe and compliant storage of waste on plant
  • Complete duty of care checks at gatepost monitor as required
  • Lead and supervise inspections and collation/trending of inventory data
  • Supervise waste generation and packaging activities
  • Ensure waste consignment paperwork is completed accurately and in accordance with the relevant waste management procedures
  • Interface with project and facility teams to collate tactical waste forecasting for the facility
  • Perform the responsibilities of Authorisations relevant to post including RMC

Aptitudes and experience:

  • HNC Science/Engineering or relevant experience
  • Relevant Nuclear decommissioning, operations and waste management experience
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Office, particularly Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word and DMS
  • Post specific capability analysis assessment number 10
